Minimum
Wage Event on April 1
Sisters and Brothers,
With increasing privatization of public services, public sector unions – like
private sector unions before them – are now representing increased
numbers of low-waged workers.
Many of us share the challenge of bargaining with multi-national private
sector employers. Our sisters and brothers in the British trade union
movement have made significant gains for low-waged workers by working
in coalition with community groups across the public and private sectors.
Our central message is simple. All workers deserve a fair day’s
pay. Why? Because poverty wages don’t work for families and poverty
wages don’t work for communities.
We’re inviting you to an exciting event on the evening of April
1st – one that we hope will be the first step toward building a
broad-based campaign for improving the wages and benefits of low-waged
workers.
We hope that you will attend this event and help to build a campaign
to make sure all workers earn a living wage.
Speakers:
Rodney Bickerstaffe – former president of the UK’s
largest public sector union, UNISON. Rodney will share stories from the
coalition
between labour and community groups that fought successfully for living
wages for East London’s workers.
Justicia for Migrant Workers – an organizer will talk about the
specific experiences of migrant workers and the importance of organizing
in new ways.
An HEU member will share some of the day-to-day realities of working
for a multi-national corporation and the impacts on their lives, families
and communities.
This event marks the beginning of a new kind of organizing – one
that specifically engages a variety of labour, community and faith-based
organizations to change poverty wages into living wages for workers and
their families.
An event poster and official invitation will be sent out shortly.
In the mean time, please mark your calendars for the evening of April
1st. The location, time and RSVP details are below.
In solidarity,
Judy Darcy
